LANGUAGE & CULTURE IV EVENING

For the ones who don't know me I'm Maria Herminia Vazquez: your Lang & cult teacher. As we didn't have a class last Thursday and won't be having classes on Thurs. 17/4 and 1/5 I'd like you to prepare some material for Thurs. 24/4. The material you need for the first term is in the photocopy centre under codes 000 and 001.

You'll have to read "What is Literature" from code 001 and answer the following questions to discuss in class:
Why does the distinction between fact and fiction to define literature stand up to close scrutiny?
Explain what the Formalists thought literature is.
What did the Formalists focus on? Why?
Why does Eagleton question the concept oif "normal language"?
What does he mean when he says that literature is not an "ontological term"?
What conclusion does he arrive at to define literature? Where does he place the focus?

Please also read "Chapter 2: The Anglo-Saxon Era" from code 000 to discuss in class.

My e-mail is profvazquez50@gmail.com. See you on the 24/4. Happy Easter, M. Herminia
